A Gun in the Hand is Worth Two in the Bush

04/10/2025

Maybe the original saying was about birds, or something like that.  Whatever the saying is, it applies to your carry gun.

Many a year ago when I started carrying, there weren't a ton of options.  Small snub nosed revolvers, derringers (yea no), anemic centerfire subcompacts like .25 ACP or .32 ACP, commander sized heavy 1911s, or scaled down compact versions of full size double stack 9mms.  One had to make a hard choice between something small to carry that was less than ideal at stopping a threat, or choosing a gun they ended up never carrying because it was too big and too heavy.

Fast forward to 2025 and there are so many options of carry guns out there it's ridiculously overwhelming.  There is quite literally no excuse to find a firearm that is easy to carry in an able caliber with good capacity and ergonomics.  Even still, people will argue a full size is required with a red dot, weapon light, and two spare magazines.  They will not accept anything less, and apply that misguided opinion towards everyone else who simply wants to carry in case they need to defend themselves. Hey, there's nothing wrong with being extra prepared but let's face a few facts about the large majority of self defense shootings.

  • Reports consistently show that there are between 60,000 and 2,500,000 defensive gun uses per year.

  • There are an average of 1,820,000 defensive gun uses per year compared to 1,100,000 reported crimes.

  • Only 2.07 million civilians regularly carry a firearm for defense.

  • Civilians are 85% more likely to use a firearm for defense than to be murdered by one.

  • The average distance in a defensive gun use shooting is three yards.

  • Average shots fired are three shots in three seconds, with caliber not even being a factor.

So what does this mean for the average individual looking to buy a carry gun for self defense?  Find reliable, well known brand firearm that is comfortable for you to shoot and carry that you can also train with often.
